DUE: Monday, 1/24 by End of Block

Hi guys! Today we will begin creating a MOVIE POSTER, that includes YOUR PET!
(no worries, if you don't have a Pet - I have another option for you)

We are going to break this up into 3 parts:
1. The Photoshoot & Questionaire (Due Tues 1/11, beginning of Block- Minor Grade)
2. Set-up Movie Poster & Critique your 1st Draft (Due Weds 1/12 MINOR GRADE)
3. Revise and Finalize your Movie Poster (Due Friday 1/14: MAJOR GRADE)

Monday and Tuesday, 1/10 & 1/11
Part 1: Research, Questionnaire & Your Pet Photo Shoot
(Due Tues 1/11 Minor Grade))
Your goal is to create a completely believable, but fictitious movie poster, that includes your pet.
If you don't happen to have a pet, you are going to make one! You can use a stuffed animal, anything you put eyes on, like a pet rock, or if you really are desperate, replace the pet with a younger Sibling.

STEP 1: Research
You are going to imitate a style or Genre of film posters - you can make your own from scratch or use an existing Movie Poster and edit it (more than 40%)
RESEARCH: Google Movie Posters for Inspiration
  • PICK A GENRE: Give considerable thought to the type of genre your movie will be. Will it be an action movie? Or science fiction?
  • When googling movie posters, remember to select, TOOLS > Size: LARGE
  • Make sure your images do not have any watermarks on it

Film Genre Ideas: http://www.createyourscreenplay.com/genrechart.htm

STEP 2: Complete prep question assignment on Google Classroom

Step 3: THE PHOTO SHOOT
  1. Using your smart phone or digital camera, you are going to take a minimum of 4 poses of your "pet"
  2. Make sure you have LIVE off on your phone
  3. Try and take the photo with a solid background, like a plain wall
  4. Take full body photos, meaning include body and legs
  5. Take multiple photos of different poses. Think about how you want their pose in your poster
  6. Upload your photos to your Google Classroom Assignment
  7. Upload your (4) photos to your blog Tuesday beginning of Block (MINOR GRADE)
Here's some tips for photographing an animal:

Major Assignment #3: CREATE a NEW CREATURE

(Major Grade)
When complete:
  1. Post JPEG to Google Classroom Assignment
  2. Post the 3 animals you used (original photos that you downloaded) in Google Classroom Assignment
  3. PSD file to Google Drive
INSTRUCTIONS:
You will create a NEW animal-creature-beast-being!!  You will use your mad Photoshop (Photopea.com) skills to combine 3 or more animal photos as seamlessly as possible using the following tools and techniques:

-Selection tools
-Filters
-Scale, rotate, distort
-Color Adjustments

Find your FOUR animal photos and open in Photoshop (or Photopea.com) (you should have a separate window for each).
  1. Create a File>New Photoshop document that is 8.5x11 inches.
  2. Cut and Paste body parts!  Using your Selection Tools (Quick Selection, Lasso, Quick Mask), select the features you want from each photo and then using the Move Tool, drag that body part into your New Document.
  3. Each body part will have a separate layer.  Match your body parts together...Edit>Transform and choose Scale, Rotate, Distort, Flip, etc.
  4. Adjust the colors of your Newimal to create a seamless look.  Color>Adjustments>Hue/Saturation or Color>Adjustments>Color Balance.
  5. Blend the body parts:  Use the Eraser Tool, Blur Tool, Smudge Tool, Clone Stamp Tool to “blend”
  6. Once you are happy with how your creature fits together, select all the body part layers and Merge Layers (right click).
  7. Now, apply a Filter (or several) over the entire Newimal—don’t abstract it though.  (Filter>Filter Gallery)
  8. Decide on your Newimal’s natural habitat and drag that photo into your document.  Scale it to fit into the background and drag this layer to the bottom, so that your newimal sits on top.  Apply a filter to the background as well.
  9. Finishing touches:  add your newimals shadow (burn and dodge tools), change the colors of your background, etc.
You will be evaluated on:
  • Matching of body parts (Selection tools, Scale, Rotate, Flip, Distort)
  • Matching of colors (Hue/Saturation, Color Balance)
  • Blending Techniques (Eraser, Blur, Smudge, Clone Stamp…including various opacities and settings)
  • Creativity/Originality
NEW PHOTOSHOP TOOLS/TECHNIQUES

Edit > Transform > Flip Horizontal to get the mirror image of a photo or part of a photo.

Use the smudge tool to create “movement” in your art, make a photo look more “painterly” or blend areas of photos together.  Use blur tool to make images more hazy and less defined.

The clone stamp tool allows you to duplicate part of an image.  This can be used to cover up parts of the original image.

The Dodge tool and the Burn tool lighten or darken areas of the image. These tools are based on a traditional darkroom technique for regulating exposure on specific areas of a print. Photographers hold back light to lighten an area on the print (dodging) or increase the exposure to darken areas on a print (burning).

How to Animate a Vector File in Wick Editor

I animated Tanmay's character that he created in Adobe Illustrator, converted it to Vectr.com, and animated it in the Wick Editor App to create the following Walking Sequence Animation

You will create your animation using the Character you created in ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR
Follow the instructions below carefully. Go Step by Step.
I have also created a Tutorial for you to follow.

The Tutorial is posted BELOW the REQUIREMENTS section of the instructions.

Watch my Tutorial and then READ the Instructions before you begin your Animation.

Instructions:

1.  Create your Assets in Adobe Illustrator using the Character you have already created in Vectr.com (the one you will be using from your storyboard)

2.  In vectr.com, Open your Character

3.  Select each section by dragging the cursor around the items you are going to make into a PNG (upper leg, lower leg, right upper arm, etc.)

    • Click EXPORT >  SELECTION > PNG

3.  Repeat for each of your Character's body parts.

  • Example: Lower Leg.png;  Upper Leg; Upper Arm.png; Lower Arm.png, etc.
  • Make sure that you have clicked SELECTION option (NOT PAGE) under the little gray arrow and SELECT > PNG
  • Click DOWNLOAD
  • REPEAT for each part of your Character

4.  Once you download all your components

  • put all the files in one folder and name the Folder: Name_BODY PARTS

5. Save your Vectr.com file in case you need to go back to it.

NEXT.....

1. Open the Wick Editor App

  • Basically, you will be setting up your animation like you set up your stick figure animation.
  • Create a NEW File
  • Go to the EDITOR SETTINGS in the upper right-hand corner (looks like a spiky circle) (See Video TUTORIAL below)

  • SELECT 720 (Standard Youtube video Size) > Click APPLY
  • Create a NEW LAYER (this will be your Background)
    • Remember to keep this layer behind all your movements.
    • Drag the frame ending to make it as long as your whole video
    • Import a BACKGROUND image as an asset
      • I imaged searched a classroom cartoon, you can draw a background or find something that works for you from the internet
      • Make sure it doesn't have any watermarks on it.
    • TO ADD YOUR BACKGROUND IMAGE:
      1. Go to the Assets Window (See image above)
      2. Click the Square with the ARROW pointing UP to Add your assets (background image and all the body parts in the folder)
      3. GO TO your Background layer > DRAG the asset from the Asset Panel into that folder frame
      4. Resize it as needed.
  • Create another LAYER, Name it Movements (see Mrs. A's Tutorial Video below)
    • Move this Layer ABOVE the Background Layer
    • ADD a NEW FRAME - make it 2 frames long by dragging the little box over 2 frames
    • Arrange your body parts into your first position
      • Drag your body parts from the Asset panel and move into your desired location
      • Your first movement should start off the page
  • ADD a new frame
  • SELECT this FRAME you just made > DUPLICATE (Ctrl + D)
    • This will make an exact duplicate of the frame
    • or
    • Make a NEW frame by clicking the empty box next to your current frame
      • expand it so it is 2 frames long
      • Go back to your PREVIOUS FRAME > SELECT ALL (Ctrl + A)
      • COPY (Ctrl + C)
      • Go to the NEW FRAME you just made and PASTE (Ctrl + P)
  • In this new FRAME with your duplicate Character
    • Move the Character over slightly and adjust the body parts to create the 2nd movement of a walking sequence
      • SELECT ALL (Ctrl + A) and using the arrow keys on your keyboard, move it over slightly
    • Use the onion skin option so you can see your previous frame.
    • Adjust your individual Body parts
  • CREATE a NEW FRAME (by duplicating the frame or by creating a new frame like above) and adjust your Character's body parts to make the next movement
  • REPEAT
REPEAT for Every Movement (see Reference for Walking Sequence on our class blog)
  • You will create a FRAME for every movement until your character walks around your background (I had about 38 frames)
    • Follow the reference images for walking from one side to another or walking forward (located in Google Classroom)
    • You can also "Turn" your character and have it walk towards you (See Mrs. A.'s video tutorial)
  • Check and recheck your timeline to make sure that everything is flowing the way it's supposed to
  • Go back and adjust any steps you missed
  • SAVE regularly so if your computer or the software crashes you don't lose your work
  • Add music to your video by uploading an MP3 to your asset panel
    • Go to your BACKGROUND LAYER
    • Drag your MP3 onto that layer - your music will play for the duration of your background
  • SAVE your WICK file and upload to your Google Drive
  • EXPORT as a VIDEO (mp4) and post in the Google Assignment
  • Please make your animation longer if you'd like. Around 10 seconds for your final video will be good.
  • My video was about 7 seconds.
REQUIREMENTS:
1.  Background (you can draw it or download from the internet)
2.  Minimum of 10 secs of a walking sequence
3.  MUST DEMONSTRATE and Follow the basic walking sequence (arms and legs move at the joint, feet change position, the body goes up and down, etc.)

          DESIGN TIPS

          PACKAGING

Packaging is part of Promotion.  It can Persuade, Remind and Inform us.  Packaging sells the product in addition to protecting it.  Your package and its design will help set apart your product from all other cereals on the store shelf.  The package design must attract the consumer’s eye and motivate him/her to purchase your cereal.

          DESIGNING A PACKAGE
Look at several cereal boxes to get ideas on good design.  Some elements of design that will be helpful in designing your package are listed below.

          FOCAL POINT:
What do you want the consumer to see and remember?  To see first?  Main item (Name of Cereal) should be larger, bolder, placed on the package carefully and/or more colorful than other items.

          COLOR:
Color attracts attention and interest. It provides background for your message and helps deliver the message.  It makes people happy, sad and even makes people hungry.  The first color we see is yellow.  Research has proven that red, orange, brown and green are colors which stimulate the appetite or encourage people to eat!  Blue and purple do not. However you would never put bread in a green color - it might look moldy.  Select your colors carefully.

          SPACE:
Putting too much on a package makes it hard to see the most important message.  Also size of message and style make the message more appealing and more readable.  Use only one or two fonts, but use many sizes and bold and italics to add emphasis.
